I’ve been very active on Twitter (I’ll reluctantly call it ‘X’) in the last few months. India was having a major election and I felt that was the best place to get news. A lot of my friends have quit/ or are no longer active there because it can be quite disheartening to read the kind of vitriol that is spewed there.
There was a time, I wanted to be away from it all and not participate in it too. But this election season, I was glad to be there. I witnessed the bravery of so many people, standing up for truth at the risk of being villified and also facing possible imprisonment and physical harm. This is not just because of the Right Wingers on X, but a Government that is ready to use its machinery against the individual!
These are just 3 people who come to mind
Mohammed Zubair ( @zoo_bear on X ) - arrested and imprisoned before on false charges, and having aged parents and young children, he doesn’t hesitate to prove news to be fake!
Dr Medusa ( @ms_medusssa on X )- a satirist who speaks out for women, against corruption, against hatred. Very appropriately her X banner reads ‘Well behaved women seldom make history’.
The Ranting Gola ( @therantinggola on X) - a younger woman who has a unique way of making you smile while hitting hard at the issues she takes on - the Government, scams, violence against women….
Witnessing these individuals, some genuine journalists and a whole lot of us who added our two cents’ worth, was an experience to remember. That the election results, despite the best efforts of the facsist government, were much better than anticipated, shows that speaking truth to power matters.
It’s important for us to speak out against evil. To break the silence that sometimes engulfs issues because of fear.
There’s a whole population of Palestians being killed by the Israelis. There are women being raped in India. There are large amounts of funds which should be used for public good being siphoned off by billionaires and evil politicians.
Let’s speak out. Let’s break the many silences around.
It is not difference which immobilizes us, but silence. And there are so many silences to be broken. - Audre Lorde
